Pyrus cal. Chanticleer

Pyrus cal. Chanticleer commonly called Ornamental Pear is a deciduous tree and a selected form of the Callery Pear.  The Callery Pear is a native of Central and South China and was first described in 1872.  This selected form was bred in the 1950’s in Ohia, America by Edward Scanlon.

Pyrus cal. Chanticleer is a stunning tree in the spring it has a pale ivory white coloured flower that is in clusters on the bare branches.  As these flowers fade the fresh vibrant new leaves come out.  These leaves are a good dark green with a glossy surface and very disease resistant.  These leaves turn in the Autumn to a glorious golden yellow and red.  On the nursery these leaves can still be on the trees in the middle of November.

The Pyrus cal. Chanticleer is a good all purpose tree being tolerant of both drought and moisture and also excellently suited for cold areas although in cold areas it might be slightly later in its flowering.  They are also very good a tolerating atmospheric pollution, so this makes them a good tree for an urban area.  They prefer being in full sun.  It is a deep rooted tree so it is suitable for use near paving as it is less likely to disturb it

Pyrus cal. Chanticleer was given an Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1984.
