As it comes from slightly more temperate climates than in the United Kingdom, it can be susceptible to frosts and cold winds, so is best planted in either coastal locations or sheltered inland areas and cities. It is happiest in a free draining soil but will grow in most soil types except poorly drained ones. It will form a very dense evergreen hedge and gives a great privacy screen.
